When you think of Guinness World Records you would likely think of an amazing sporting achievement or an unusual animal sighting. Well, would you believe there is a Guinness World Record for Scratch Cards?

How did the Guinness Book of World Records start?

The concept came into being in the early 1950’s. The intention was to solve pub arguments, by becoming the ultimate authority on record-breaking achievements.

Who conceptualised the Guinness Book of World Records?

Sir Hugh Beaver, then MD of the Guinness Brewery, attended a shooting party where he and his hosts then argued as to which game bird was the fastest in Europe. There were no reference books which could a conclusive answer.

A Marketing concept is born:

Often punters in the various pubs found themselves squabbling over this, that or the other while drinking a pint of Guinness. The Guinness Book of World Records could provide answers to settle most pub disputes.

Throughout the years the Guinness World Records and Scratch Cards gained momentum and finally, on the 19th July 2019, a Guinness World Record for Scratch Cards was achieved.

The Idaho Lottery celebrated their 30th anniversary in a big way. A Guinness World Record kind of way!

The Payette Brewing Company hosted the largest gathering of people all scratching Scratch Cards at the same time.

The Idaho Lottery hold the official Guinness World Record title for the largest gathering of people scratching Scratch Cards at the same time, 479 people were present and scratching Scratch Cards on that day.

Other Lottery Related Guinness World Records have been awarded:

The Largest gathering of lottery millionaires. On the 7th October 2015, 110 of the 4000 National Lottery-made millionaires gathered in London to celebrate 21 years since the beginning of the National Lottery.  At the same event a second Guinness World Record was achieved, by successfully popping 285 champagne corks in relay.  Camelot Lotteries Ltd are therefore champions of the Longest champagne cork popping relay in the world.

Greatest Jackpot in a National Lottery was won on the 13th January 2016, a gigantic jackpot of $1,586,400,000 saw 3 lucky lottery ticket holders throughout the USA win the Powerball Lottery after there were no winners in the 19 previous Lottery draws.

In Mexico, in 2008, the world record for the Most Lottery Prizes Given in a year, was scooped up by Pronósticos para la Asistencia Pública (Mexico) for their 97,909,447 prizes awarded in 8 games.

The Guinness World Record for the Largest Simultaneous Lottery Game Held in One Location was achieved on the 29th November 2009. The game called Win For Life was created by Sisal. 40,001 People gathered in Milan (Italy) to play for the cash prize of £4,000.

€90,000,000 is the Largest Online Gambling Payout recorded by the Guinness World Records.
